luxData®
Database administration
Flexible due to the supplied database assistant
The database assistant integrated in luxData® means that you can administrate
SQL server and MSDE databases with perfect ease:
Backup, restoration and copying of entire databases at the push of a button.
Even if you use the license cost-free version of the SQL server, the MSDE (Microsoft
Database Engine), the luxData® database assistant is suitable for administration,
as the SQL Enterprise Manager" is missing in this version.
The functions of the luxData® database assistant are targeted at experienced
users, but also at database administrators who want to save time!
Security
Naturally, the luxData® database assistant is also integrated with the luxData
security concept - should you have any fears that your users may unintentionally
carry out dangerous actions with the luxData® database assistant, you have the
option of activating or deactivating the luxData® database assistant for certain
users/groups or you can shut it down completely.
Motivation and areas of use
- Classic data backup
Even if the database administrator is in charge of your data backup in the network
environment, manual backups of the entire data stock in one file is often an interesting
option: this is true when you are not entirely certain concerning the repercussions
of an application function. This applies in particular to advanced and specialised
functions that a professional user may employ: material deployment, calculation
of replacement dates, mass replacements and mass copies, etc.
- Project introduction, data transfer
Within the framework of a data transfer or data clearance, it may be necessary that
you the customer send the data to sixData; it will then be processed internally
within sixData and then sent back to you. In order to keep the time required for
this procedure to a minimum, the security and restore function in the luxData®
database assistant includes a ZIP function (ZIP-compressed SQL server backup files
are usually ten times smaller than the original!). Naturally, this means that e-mail
dispatch is significantly faster.
- Rapid support
If one considers the fact that database and network administrators are often overtaxed,
this kind of tool is definitely sensible. Simple backup and restoration of a database
with integrated ZIP function restricts export and import to just a few mouse clicks!
- Mobile use
The copy function is of particular interest to national providers with their own
municipal customers. It ensures that the field services employees can copy the current
database to his or her notebook - in just six mouse clicks!
- An exemplary, practically relevant scenario
For instance, a professional user would like to vary the service life of lamp catalogue
types in order to be able to simulate the repercussions of this amendment on the
master data within the framework of calculating replacement dates. Naturally, it
would not be sensible at this point to use the productive data stock for this action.
The solution with the luxData® database assistant: the professional user installs
a local level of the free MSDE. Using the database assistant, he now copies the
current productive database from the main database server to his local MSDE database
server, logs on there once more and can now implement changes without having to
consider the productive data stock! Evaluations, amendments and "what if"
calculations are now possible, independent of the main database.
